Gonbad Kavous University was founded in 1983 as The Institute of Agriculture offering two post-diploma fields of study with the supervision of Mazandaran University. That Institute was then supervised by Gorgan University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This activity was continued until 1999 with the increase in fields of study and the promotion from Institute to Faculty. Then, in 2008 the faculty became independent from Gorgan University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and nominated as Gonbad Kavous Higher Education Complex with three educational levels of Pos-diploma, Bachelor of Art and Sciences, and Master of Sciences giving service to 2500 students in three faculties of Agriculture, Humanities and Physical Education, and Basic Sciences and Engineering. Finally, in 2011 it was promoted to Gonbad Kavous University which has now 56 fields of study and 5 faculties.
